Why Oklahoma premiums run so high
Oklahoma homeowners pay among the highest premiums in the country — roughly twice the national average. Insurify puts the 2026 Oklahoma average at about $5,200 a year (vs. about $3,060 nationally); NerdWallet's 2026 figure for a larger $400,000 dwelling is $7,255.
The reason is wind and hail. The Oklahoma Insurance Department lists windstorms, hail, tornadoes and freezes as the costs insurers price for, and two of every three Oklahoma hail events in the past three years were severe. Rebuilding costs and reinsurance have risen too.
That is why most Oklahoma policies carry a separate wind and hail deductible — commonly 1% to 5% of the dwelling coverage, about 2% on average — instead of a flat dollar amount.
What lowers a quote
- An impact-resistant (UL 2218 Class 4) or FORTIFIED roof. Oklahoma carriers have filed wind/hail discounts of up to 42% for FORTIFIED roofs; Class 4 shingle discounts are commonly 10%–30%. Discounts are set by each insurer.
- A newer roof. A 20-year-old roof can cost about 21% more to insure than a new one, and some carriers decline or inspect roofs past about 20 years.
- A higher deductible, or a percentage wind/hail deductible you can afford to pay after a storm.
- Strengthen Oklahoma Homes grants of up to $10,000 toward a FORTIFIED roof (Oklahoma Insurance Department).
- Shopping several carriers. Prices for the same home vary widely in Oklahoma — a local independent agent can compare them.
